A Welcome from our President

“Hi” from Birmingham Branch President, Derek Castle!

Welcome to our web site. We are one of the oldest branches of the British Cactus and Succulent Society (formerly the National Cactus & Succulent Society), being started in 1947. From modest beginnings we then grew to be one of the largest in membership.

We do our bit (lot!) to promote the Society – starting perhaps around 1989 we put on a stand at the Malvern Three Counties RHS Show, and at the same time judged the entries in the cactus classes for over ten years. Our members were persuaded to enter their own plants, which gave the public a better idea of what they could expect their plants to turn into. It was in 1994 that we first promoted the branch and Society at the NEC Gardeners’ World Live event and are still appearing at this large show.

We can arrange for other groups of cactophiles to visit some of our collections, and members of BCSS are welcome to compete in our two shows each year – it’s a great social exercise, and there are hundreds of plants to tempt you!

Newcomers are always welcome at meetings – and you don’t have to have joined the society to come along. Do visit us, and keep in touch with changing details through our website!

Cheers to all,

Derek Castle
